Hopton, Susanna

In her conversions to and from Catholicism, and her eventual nonjurism, devotional writer Susanna Hopton (1627–1709) directly engaged in the religious upheavals of the second half of the seventeenth century. While scholars today best remember her for association with Thomas Traherne, she was a writer and theologian in her own right, composing devotionals that adapted Roman Catholic sources for Anglican use, and letters justifying her doctrinal allegiances. These devotionals and letters were frequently reprinted in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and her life commemorated in compilations of virtuous women.
