D’Anvers, Alicia

Alicia D’Anvers (née Clarke) (1667/8–1725) was a satirical writer who published two poems under her own name in 1691, with a possible third two years later. Having grown up around the University of Oxford, she used comic doggerel verse to create a bawdy burlesque on its students’ behavior, which met with some success. She also responded to the temporary departure of King William III from Britain in a short poem that combines female romantic in-fighting with political commentary.
