Elizabeth Bathurst (1655–1685) was a Quaker writer, systematic theologian, and itinerant preacher who is “among the most notable female exponents of Quaker theology” (Mack, Visionary women: ecstatic prophecy in seventeenth-century England. University of California Press, Berkeley, 1995, 313). Her writings were published by the Sowle Press, “the best-known Quaker publishing house” (Brown et al., Elizabeth Bathurst entry: Orlando: women’s writing in the british isles from the beginnings to the present. Cambridge University Press Online, Cambridge, np). She wrote three texts: Truth’s Vindication (1679), A Expostulatory Appeal to the Professors of Christianity (1680) and The Sayings of Women (1683). Truth’s Vindication, a defense of Quaker practices, was combined “with posthumous remembrances written by friends and family” (Garman, Elizabeth Bathurst: “Tis not inky character can make a Saint”.
