Pharmacy systems have been developed for both hospital and community pharmacies to label medicines and manage ordering and stock control. These systems were first developed as modular pharmacy information systems in hospitals in the United States, but their use is now universal in the developed world, either as modular systems or as stand-alone pharmacy departmental systems. Although they are arguably the most well-established system that handles medicine data, and they are widely used, there is little published information about their benefits. This chapter describes the functional requirements and standard operation of pharmacy systems in both hospital and community pharmacies. The chapter outlines some of the integration and reporting requirements for these systems. The chapter also discusses the use of pharmacy services support applications for transfer of care and the “pharmacy first” service model.
