Healthcare records ensure quality, safety and continuity of care, and it is standard practice for healthcare professionals to keep records of the consultations they perform. This chapter discusses the use of electronic health records with particular reference to pharmacy and medicines. The chapter outlines the key medicolegal concepts that underpin record keeping, confidentiality, consent and liability, and describes the key principles of access, use and sharing electronic health records (EHRs). Benefits of EHRs relating to medicines are discussed—for example, reduction of inappropriate prescribing and polypharmacy and monitoring prescribing practice and antibiotics stewardship—and the use of clinical pathways is outlined. The chapter lists various ways in which EHRs can support pharmacy practice.
