Sustainable Use of Fruit and Vegetable Waste By-Products for the Manufacture of Biodegradable Food Packaging Films

Plastic pollution poses a significant environmental challenge, particularly in the food industry, where synthetic polymers are widely used for packaging. Conventional plastic materials contribute to long-term waste accumulation due to their non-biodegradable nature, necessitating development of sustainable alternatives. This study explores utilization of fruit and vegetable waste by-products, including banana peelsBanana peels, citrus peels, and potato skins, for production of biodegradable food packaging films. Key biopolymers, such as starch, pectin, and cellulose, are extracted from agricultural residues and processed into films. The prepared films are characterized based on their mechanical strength, water vapor permeability, and biodegradability to assess their suitability as an alternative to synthetic plastics. By integrating waste valorization with sustainable packaging solutions, this experiment aligns with global initiatives aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting a circular economy. The findings contribute to advancement of eco-friendly materials, offering a promising approach to sustainable food packaging.
