Pollen Cryopreservation of Pandanus fascicularis

Pandanus fascicularis Lam. (Pandanaceae), which is commonly known as “kewda” in India, is native to coastlines and sea shoreline areas. It has great ornamental, medicinal, and economic importance because of the utilization of its male spadices for the production of “kewda” perfume. Fruits are rich in nutrients, including both macro- and micronutrients. In addition to traditional handicraft products and their ornamental value, different parts of the kewda plant exhibit various pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory activities. Therefore, to conserve genetic diversity from erosion caused by various biotic and abiotic stresses, pollen cryopreservation is a complementary method to preserve haploid genetic diversity for an infinite period. This phenomenon has been demonstrated by the high pollen viability of cryopreserved pollen. The establishment of a “pollen cryobank” for this species, in addition to fulfilling various other needs, considerably reduces the maintenance of crops in the field for the regular supply of pollen for future breeding programs.
