Physical Quality Parameter Analysis of Extracted Essential Oil: Color, Refractive Index, Viscosity, Specific Gravity and Density
摘要
Essential oils are well-known for their aromatic and therapeutic properties, making precise characterization necessary for product standardization, quality assessment and providing insights into purity of oils extracted for their effective utilization in diverse applications. This study presents a detailed analysis on the measurement of the key physical quality parameters: color (hue, saturation, brightness), refractive index, viscosity, density and specific gravity of essential oils. Colorimeter characterizes the color of the essential oil based on its interaction with light by measuring the light absorbed or transmitted by the essential oil at specific wavelengths within the visible spectrum, thus providing L* (a spherical color solid), a* and b* (chromaticity coordinates) values, chrome value and hue angle. Also, light changes speed as it passes through essential oils. A refractometer measures the bending of light to determine the essential oil’s refractive index. A pycnometer measures the density of an essential oil and also, in relation to a reference fluid, usually distilled water to calculate the specific gravity of the essential oil. The viscometer measures the viscosity of an essential oil by subjecting it to controlled flow conditions. Inadequate solubility, low bioavailability, uncontrollably high volatility and poor long-term stability of essential oils restrict their use, thus making the study of essential oil’s physical characteristics mandatory.
