Ketamine’s fast-acting effects, flexible ways of being administered, and strong safety profile—especially its ability to avoid respiratory depression—make it well suited for space, where airway management can be complex. Its stability under extreme conditions implies that it could also be stored safely for long time periods on missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Including ketamine in emergency protocols gives astronauts the ability to handle a variety of medical emergencies on their own, helping ensure safety and self-reliance as we venture into space. More research is needed to comprehend the behavior of ketamine in space.
