Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent Extraction Protocols for Tannins from Alchemilla vulgaris L.

Alchemilla vulgaris L. (A. xanthochlora Rothm.), which is also known as lady’s mantle, is regarded as a medicinal plant and is a rich source of biologically active compounds that are potential candidates for medical treatments. One of the most enchanting constituents of Alchemilla vulgaris L. is tannins. Tannins are high-molecular-weight polyphenolic compounds that have various chemical structures and can be found in different parts of plants, in both bound and free forms. Their charming properties make them suitable for numerous fields of applications, such as medicine, food and beverage production, the tannin industry, adhesives, etc. With regard to these applications, there are a great number of studies on the extraction of tannins from many different plants. Besides conventional extraction methods, the combination of nonconventional methods with new-generation green solvents is an emerging strategy for the effective recovery of target compounds. Especially, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs), which are a natural-component subclass of deep eutectic solvents, have gained much attention due to their nontoxic nature and compatibility with extracts. Despite the rich tannin content of Alchemilla vulgaris L., studies on the extraction of tannins in the literature are limited. Here, we aim to present an efficient extraction protocol to recover tannins from Alchemilla vulgaris L. using natural deep eutectic solvents.
