Symptomatology is the first step in detecting plant viruses without which a lot of the current advancements in plant virology would not be possible. The lack of symptoms on an infected plant will create a lot of confusion during management of the disease. Hence, the first step in detecting and studying plant viruses is to identify virus-infected plants based on symptoms. Virus-like symptoms are also observed in plants due to unfavorable abiotic factors, and hence, viral disease diagnosis solely based on symptoms is very complex because of their similarities (Lievens et al., Recent research developments in microbiology, 2005). This protocol is a basic and quick method, which can help in building the basis for identification and detection of plant viruses based on symptoms.
