To fully realize the potential of dental pulp stem ells (DPSCs) for regenerative dentistry, a comprehensive understanding of dental development and tooth structure is paramount. A deeper exploration of this domain can catalyze innovative therapies aimed at stimulating stem cells for tooth repair and regeneration. Evolutionary, developmental, and comparative dental embryology, which emerged in the late nineteenth century, are complementary fields crucial to this endeavor. Establishing a robust taxonomy for dental embryology requires a comparative analysis of homologous traits across extant and extinct species. By deciphering the mechanisms underlying atavism, or the re-emergence of ancestral traits, we can unlock new avenues for clinical and biological applications in tooth restoration. This chapter also delves into early theories of dental patterning as foundational steps toward simulating organogenesis.
