Antibodies are used for the specific and sensitive detection of biomolecules. They can be produced from animal blood, in cell culture or by genetic engineering. The usual tests that rely on antibodies require about 1 d, but rapid assays have been developed that do not require separation of bound from unbound antibodies; they are used, e.g. for clinical diagnosis in the emergency department.
