Patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery or orthopedic surgery should be screened for Staph aureus carrier status in nares. If positive, should have preparative decolonization (mupirocin with or without body wash with chlorhexidine gluconate for 5 days). Both mupirocin and chlorhexidine are effective for decolonization of Staph aureus including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
