The Y-Maze Test Combined with Fluorescence Recordings for Assessing Neural Correlates of Cognition

The Y-Maze paradigm is a straightforward and cost-effective method for studying spontaneous alternation as well as spatial reference memory that requires minimal resources, such as training animals, output analysis, and the use of typical reinforcers. Consequently, it finds widespread application in researching short- and long-term memory, as well as in aging animal models and others that model neuropsychological disorders. By monitoring neuronal activity with cell specificity in freely behaving animal models, researchers can gain valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms of brain function in health and disease. Dynamics of genetically targeted neuronal populations can be accurately recorded through fluorescent indicators, enabling simultaneous behavioral studies to be conducted.
