Use of Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) to Assess the Levels of Phosphorus and Cadmium in Lettuce

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a highly sensitive and reliable technique widely employed for the analysis of trace elements in complex matrices. While traditional detection methods such as atomic absorption and atomic emission are still used in some scientific circles, there has been a gradual transition toward the utilization of ICP-MS in plant analysis over the past decade. This chapter presents a comprehensive protocol outlining the application of ICP-MS for the assessment of phosphorus (P) and cadmium (Cd) levels in lettuce samples. The protocol encompasses crucial steps such as sample preparation, digestion, calibration, instrument setup, sample analysis, quality control, and data analysis. By employing this method, the levels of P and Cd in lettuce and other food samples can be monitored effectively, ensuring both safety and nutritional considerations. This chapter aims to provide researchers and analysts with a valuable resource for the implementation of ICP-MS in plant analysis and contribute to the advancement of food safety and quality assessment.
