De Bruijn–Erdős Reduction to Finite Sets and Results Near the Lower Bound

We can expand the notion of the chromatic number to any subset S of the plane. The chromatic number χ(S) of S is the smallest number of colors sufficient for coloring the points of S in such a way that forbids monochromatic unit segments.
