Degradation of Chlorpyrifos Pesticide Using a Postbiotic Enzyme of Lactic Acid Bacteria

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are well known for their production of postbiotic components such as organic acids, short-chain fatty acids, enzymes, vitamins, immune-signaling compounds, etc. These compounds possess multiple applications. Specifically, the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) postbiotic enzyme of LAB is efficient in degrading chlorpyrifos, the most common organophosphorus pesticide. Therefore, in this chapter, a standard protocol for the isolation and purification of ALP using precipitation, dialysis, and gel filtration method is provided. Moreover, the ALP assay is discussed for its estimation. Further, the analysis of chlorpyrifos degradation is carried out using HPLC.
