Antibiofilm Activity of Postbiotics

Over the past few decades, biofilm-mediated diseases have become more prevalent and resistant to antibiotics, necessitating a new approach to therapy. Postbiotics are the byproducts of probiotic microbial fermentation that are released by microbial cells. It is known that strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are capable of producing a variety of postbiotics with great inhibitory potential. Unlike probiotics, postbiotics are metabolic components produced by probiotics that have the advantage of being more stable. The antibiofilm activity of postbiotics will be displayed either through biofilm inhibition or through the disintegration of pre-formed biofilm. The growing interest in the utilization of postbiotics in the treatment requires the knowledge of postbiotics extraction methods and assays related to biofilmology. This chapter will elaborate on the protocols for the extraction of postbiotics and their applicability as antibiofilm agents.
