Ernest Fox Nichols made the first convincing detection of infrared radiation from stars in 1901, 100 years after the detection by William Herschel of infrared radiation from the Sun. He invented the Nichols radiometer and performed fundamental experiments on the infrared properties of materials, pushing these measurements out to a wavelength of 50 microns. With G.F. Hull, he demonstrated the existence of radiation pressure.
