Wood, Harley Weston

Harley Wood was the director of Sydney Observatory from 1943 to 1974, and under his leadership the Observatory completed both the Sydney and Melbourne zones of the Astrographic Catalogue. He was the foundation president of the Astronomical Society of Australia in 1966 and 1967, and the chair of the National Committee for Astronomy from 1966 to 1974. Wood was the main local organizer of the 1973 General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union. He communicated with numerous astronomers around the world and provided guidance to Australian radio astronomers in the early days of the discipline.
