As principal investigator (PI), Arthur D. Code was responsible for the design of the Wisconsin Experiment Package (WEP), one of two suites of instruments flown aboard the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory (OAO-2), which represented a milestone in the advent of space astronomy. Code also founded the Space Astronomy Laboratory (SAL) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and helped to create the Wisconsin Automatic Photoelectric Telescope (APT)—the first robotic telescope. He served as interim director (1981) of the Space Telescope Science Institute and was also PI of the Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photo-Polarimeter Experiment (WUPPE) that was flown twice aboard NASA Space Shuttles in 1990 and 1995.
