Physicist and astronomer Gerry Neugebauer led the group that did the first major infrared sky survey at 2 microns and led the science team that executed the IRAS all-sky survey in the wavelength range 12–100 microns. He was the co-discoverer (with Eric Becklin) of the center of the Milky Way galaxy in the infrared and the archetypical protostar – the Becklin-Neugebauer object – in the Orion Molecular Cloud (Fig. 1).
