Construction and Derivatization of Indole Derivatives Under Electrochemical Conditions

Indole and its derivatives, both naturally occurring and synthetic, are known to possess wide-ranging biological activity, which promote chemists to develop numerous methods for their efficient preparation. Organic electrocheical synthesis, possessing unique reaction selectivity, offers a mild and convenient alternative to the synthesis of indole derivatives versus conventional thermal transformation using hazardous chemical oxidants and reductants. This chapter will selectively introduce the examples of indole synthesis from various reactants, indole functionalization from simple indole derivatives, and construction of three-dimensional indole-based molecules via electrochemical protocols.
