Maintaining an active and safe water infrastructure is critical to the health and survival of humans and ecosystems across the world. While advances in computerization provide significant advantages for the water sector, the overall digitalization process has also exposed numerous vulnerabilities to hacking and terrorism, thus making cybersecurity a critical priority for the water industry. Cybersecurity refers to the preventative techniques used to protect the integrity of networks, programs, and data from attack, damage, and other forms of unauthorized access. This chapter provides an overview of emerging cybersecurity issues in water infrastructure, including the importance of cybersecurity, the risks associated with managing and operating water systems, cybersecurity guidelines for water utilities, and relevant regulatory considerations.
