The Landsat Satellite System is the world’s first and longest running land observation satellite system. This chapter starts with a review of the Landsat satellites from 1972 through the latest launch in 2021, and the Landsat NeXT projected launch in 2030/2031. This chapter reviews the technical evolution of the Landsat sensors, a basic instruction on passive remote sensing, and how the images are used to monitor different aspects of the Earth’s surface. Finally, this chapter demonstrates the use of the satellites’ images for a variety of water resource monitoring and applications in smart farming.
