Disinfection Byproducts in Daily Life

Disinfection byproducts (DBPs), formed as secondary contaminants during water disinfection processes, are frequently detected in domestic settings such as drinking water and swimming pools, posing considerable health risks to humans. Consequently, controlling DBPs is crucial for water consumers. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of various methods for removing DBPs through household facility processes, also known as point-of-use facilities, including boiling, activated carbon adsorption, membrane filtration, and ultraviolet photolysis. In addition to discussing the performance and mechanisms of these processes, the chapter explores intrinsic factors (such as the physical-chemical properties of DBPs) and extrinsic factors (including pH and temperature). Accordingly, a detailed procedure for boiling water to achieve DBPs removal is presented. Furthermore, given that swimming is a widely recognized health-boosting activity suitable for all age groups, the formation and control of DBPs in swimming pools has also been discussed.
