Understanding disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors is crucial for effectively controlling the harmful DBPs in water treatment. This chapter serves to introduce DBP precursors and outline approaches to assess their DBP formation potentials. Additionally, it delves into specific methodologies for characterizing these precursors, emphasizing their critical properties that influence DBP generation. In general, there exists a positive correlation between the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) and the optical parameters and chemical properties associated with aromatic components in dissolved organic matter (DOM). Furthermore, DOM with lower molecular weight and higher hydrophobicity is more prone to reacting with chlorine, leading to the generation of DBPs. Moreover, this chapter provides an overview of the spatial-temporal distribution of DBP precursors. Overall, this chapter offers comprehensive knowledge of DBP precursors, which is essential for optimizing water treatment strategies to minimize DBP formation.
