Air pollution is a significant environmental and public health issue worldwide, with diverse sources and complex effects on human health, ecosystems, and the climate. This chapter provides an in-depth examination of various air pollutants, including their sources, impacts, mechanism of action, and mitigation measures. These air pollutants include particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, ozone, heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, radon, etc. These air pollutants can impact human health when inhaled, and cause respiratory and systemic health issues, or by being absorbed and distributed within the body, leading to systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, and other health problems. The effects vary depending on the type of pollutant, its chemical characteristics, and how it enters the body. Effective pollution control measures and regulatory actions are needed to reduce emissions and protect public health and the environment from the harmful effects of air pollution. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2, 3, and 11 focus on effective pollution control measures, and regulatory actions are needed to reduce emissions and protect public health and the environment from the harmful effects of air pollution such as poverty and food insecurity.
