Air Pollution and the Sustainable Development Goals
摘要
The interconnectedness of air pollution with climate change and sustainable development underscores the need for integrated and collaborative approaches to address complex environmental challenges. The air pollution and climate change feedback loops and amplification mechanisms exacerbate each other’s impacts and contribute to environmental degradation. For example, air pollution can accelerate the melting of glaciers and ice caps through the deposition of dark particles (such as black carbon) on snow and ice surfaces, reducing their reflectivity and increasing the absorption of solar radiation. Therefore, recognizing and addressing these interlinkages will foster the development of holistic solutions that promote clean air, mitigate climate change, and advance sustainable development goals for the benefit of people and the planet. This chapter aims to discuss the connections between air pollution and sustainable development goals. Air pollution is a critical global environmental challenge that poses risks to human health, ecosystems, economies, and sustainable development. For instance, concerns about air pollution-related health risks and environmental degradation are driving community activism, advocacy, and demands for environmental justice. Addressing air pollution requires concerted efforts at the local, national, and international levels to reduce emissions, promote clean technologies, and safeguard public health and the environment. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a comprehensive framework for addressing air pollution and its associated challenges. By integrating efforts to reduce air pollution into broader sustainable development strategies, countries can promote public health, protect the environment, and advance progress toward achieving the SDGs and creating a more sustainable future for all. By prioritizing clean air as a fundamental right and adopting evidence-based policies and strategies, societies can work toward achieving cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environments for the present and promote sustainable development for future generations.
