Air pollution is a pervasive environmental problem with far-reaching economic implications. This chapter provides an analysis of the economic impacts of air pollution, focusing on the costs incurred to illustrate the impacts, as well as policy implications, and recommendations for mitigation strategies. The economic costs of air pollution are substantial and multifaceted, encompassing direct healthcare expenditures, productivity losses, and environmental degradation. Studies have estimated the economic burden of air pollution at both the national and global levels, underscoring the urgency of implementing effective pollution control measures to mitigate economic losses and protect public health. For instance, economic losses because of the effects of ground-level ozone on wheat yields totaled EUR 1,418 million in Europe. The annual economic impact of air pollution in China is estimated at USD 900 billion a year, while in the United States, it is USD 600 billion, and India follows closely as the three nations bear the greatest economic brunt of air pollution. The economic framework for analyzing air pollution encompasses cost-benefit analysis, economic valuation methods, and market-based instruments. Cost-benefit analysis allows policymakers to compare the costs of pollution control measures with the benefits of reduced pollution-related damages, aiding in decision-making and resource allocation. Economic valuation assigns monetary values to the health and environmental impacts of pollution, facilitating the quantification of pollution-related costs and benefits. Market-based instruments, such as emissions trading systems and pollution taxes, provide economic incentives for pollution reduction by internalizing the external costs of pollution and stimulating innovation in pollution control technologies. However, there is a need to develop cost-effective pollution control strategies, implement market-based instruments, and reallocate resources to priority areas such as healthcare and environmental restoration. By investing in pollution control measures, governments can mitigate the economic costs of air pollution, promote sustainable development, and safeguard public health. In conclusion, the economic analysis of air pollution provides valuable insights into the costs and benefits of pollution control efforts, guiding policymakers in decision-making and resource allocation. Further research is needed to refine economic models, improve data quality, and enhance our understanding of the complex interactions between air pollution, economic development, and public health.
