Virus Separation by Membrane Technology

The application of membranes in water/wastewater treatment could reduce chlorine consumption in the final disinfection process. It has become one of the most popular alternatives to disinfection, capable of treating virus-containing wastewater/drinking water over a wide range (0.5–7 log reduction values (LRVs)). This chapter reviews the latest progress, underlying mechanisms, and influencing factors of virus separation by membrane-based technologies, and the feasible hybrid processes and operation conditions are put forward. The importance of developing antifouling membranes with efficient virus removals highlighted, the emerging concerns and promising strategies to overcome these difficulties are proposed.
