Intestinal ischemia is a severe and often misdiagnosed cause of acute, non-traumatic abdominal pain. It occurs when the mesenteric blood supply to the bowel is compromised, leading to tissue damage or necrosis that can be a life-threatening condition. Although it accounts for about 2% of gastrointestinal emergencies (Mazzei et al. 2012), the mortality rate remains alarmingly high, ranging from 50% to 90%, despite advancements in both surgical and intensive care treatments (Elder et al. 2009). The incidence of this condition is growing, a trend partly attributable to the increasing average life expectancy and the accompanying rise in vascular degenerative diseases, particularly among individuals over the age of 60 (Paterno and Longo 2008).
