The Basics and Practice of Particle Beam Radiation Therapy for Primary Nasopharyngeal Cancer
摘要
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a unique malignancy, geographically prevalent and with a unique set of challenges due to its anatomical location and histological behavior. The role of radiotherapy in NPC has been firmly established, with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) becoming the standard technology of radiation for definitive treatment. The advent of IMRT has led to a significant decrease in radiation-induced acute and late effects, primarily due to the technique’s ability to deliver highly conformal radiation doses to the target while sparing adjacent critical structures. This technological leap has also resulted in substantial improvements in local control rates. Nevertheless, approximately 10% of patients develop local recurrences after receiving definitive doses. Such persistent challenges underline the need to explore and optimize novel radiation delivery techniques that can further improve upon the outcomes seen with IMRT.
