Imaging of Bowel Obstruction
摘要
In elderly patients, bowel obstruction is one of the main causes of acute abdomen and can easily turn into a surgical emergency. The diagnosis is challenging due to atypical or late presentation and the limited reliability of physical examination and laboratory findings alone. Radiography, ultrasound, and, above all, computed tomography are essential tools to detect bowel obstruction, assess its etiology and severity, and follow its evolution. It is crucial to recognize this time-dependent disease in an early stage to ensure appropriate nonoperative or surgical management with tailored protocols that meet the special needs of this subset of patients.
