Dendritic Cell Vaccines in Cancer Immunotherapy: Expanding Horizons for Solid and Nonsolid Tumors

Dendritic cells (DCs) are specialized in presenting antigens to T cells and can initiate T cell–specific immune responses against malignancies. In addition to uptaking, processing, and presenting tumor-associated antigens to T cells, DCs must also provide co-stimulatory signals for T cells to induce an appropriate cellular immune response in the face of cancer cells. The outstanding function of DCs in the presentation of antigens and the activation of T cells has established their importance as a key player in the development of anticancer vaccination strategies. Several clinical investigations have validated the safety and effectiveness of utilizing vaccines in the context of solid and nonsolid cancers. In this chapter, we will explore the different classifications of DCs and their contributions to the activation of antitumor immune responses, subsequently addressing the topic of DC vaccines. We will also shed light on the applications of these vaccines and combination strategies that have the potential to increase the efficacy of these vaccines in generating antitumor responses in both solid and nonsolid tumors.
