Cardiovascular Toxicities of Cancer Treatment

Cardiovascular disease and cancer are common comorbidities. Various chemotherapeutic and other drug regimens used for malignancies have adverse cardiovascular toxicities such as coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, heart failure, pericardial disease, and arrhythmias. Chemotherapeutic and other drug groups that are responsible for such toxicities include anthracyclines, fluoropyrimidines, alkylating and platinum-based chemotherapy, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and HER2-targeted therapies. Radiotherapy may also invoke cardiotoxicity, if the field of radiation includes the heart, or increase the risk of abdominal aortic aneurism if includes the abdomen. There are many known mechanisms for these toxicities. Early detection of cardiovascular toxicities with multimodality imaging and biomarkers use leads to appropriate management and better prognosis.
