Locoregional Therapy Approaches for Renal Cell Carcinoma: Current Strategies and Future Directions

The incidence of kidney cancer has risen significantly in recent decades, with more than 400,000 new cases diagnosed worldwide every year. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), the most common form of kidney cancer, accounts for much of this increase, with a global rise in incidence of approximately 2%. In response to this growing challenge, locoregional therapies (LRTs) have gained increasing prominence as effective alternatives to traditional surgical resection, particularly in patients with early-stage disease who are not suitable candidates for surgery. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the most common LRTs, detailing their mechanisms of action, clinical outcomes, complications, and specific indications. The chapter also explores the integration of LRTs with systemic therapies, highlighting the potential for combination therapies to enhance treatment efficacy. We also explore other emerging therapies, such as catheter-directed therapies, irreversible electroporation, and high-intensity focused ultrasound. The findings highlight current strategies, future directions in RCC treatment, and the need for continued research to develop personalized treatment approaches that can improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
