Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in Gynecologic Cancers
摘要
Gynecologic cancers include cancers of the cervix, endometrium, ovary, vagina, and vulva. Depending on the stage and particular type of gynecologic malignancy, treatment options differ and consist of mainly surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. These treatments have a negative impact on physical and psychosocial function and quality of life. The most common problems following gynecologic cancers are pelvic floor dysfunction, fatigue, sleep problems, lymphedema, peripheral neuropathy, cognitive dysfunction, sarcopenia, and decreased bone mineral density. In this point, multidisciplinary approaches are important in the treatment of gynecologic cancers. Cancer treatment-related side effects can be alleviated with physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs and techniques such as pelvic floor muscle training, manual therapy, and especially exercise. Exercise can be effective in preventing certain types of gynecological cancers. Prehabilitation programs which include exercise are also available for individuals with gynecological cancers to reduce the side effects they face after surgery. Exercises should be prescribed according to the specific condition of the patients with gynecologic cancers and indications, contraindications should be considered. Enhancing the knowledge of patients with gynecologic malignancy and their health professionals about the advantages of exercise is crucial in order to incorporate exercise into routine cancer treatment.
