Digital Health Technologies in Cancer Care and Research

Digital health interventions proliferated during the COVID-19 pandemic. The promise of digital health interventions has been consistently applied to cancer care and cancer research. This area of healthcare, with large volumes of data for diagnosis, measurement, and treatment, lends itself well to more simple digital innovations in record management and telehealth, as well as technology such as generative AI and machine learning. Yet this area has potential challenges in bias, discrimination, lack of infrastructure, poor digital literacy, data privacy, digital ethics, and a fragmented enabling policy framework, to name a few. Research illustrates the clear benefits of digital health innovations in cancer care and research to enable more people to be diagnosed and treated, to access advanced medical interventions in resource-constrained environments, and to speed up the delivery of healthcare. However, there are several technical, social, ethical, and economic concerns. There is a dire need to include digital health solutions in the medical curricula to educate future physicians about the use of these technologies in improving patient care. Further, there is a need for an international consensus to develop policies and guidance around the use of digital health technologies. This review provides a brief description of several digital health interventions in cancer care and research and lists areas that must be considered if digital health interventions are to become part of evidence-based medicine.
