Managing Breast Cancer Using the Cell-Surface GRP78

  • Abdo A. Elfiky

摘要

Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. While significant advancements have been made in the treatment of breast cancer, there is a need for more effective management strategies. Different avenues emerged recently use the glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78) in cancer patients both in diagnosis and in treatment. In addition to managing the unfolded protein response under the stress of the unfolded proteins in cancer cells, GRP78 plays critical roles in cellular survival and response to chemotherapeutics or radiotherapy treatment. In this chapter, we will explore how cell-surface GRP78 can be utilized to manage breast cancer and potentially improve patient outcomes. This paves the way for understanding the molecular origin that links cell stress to cancer propagation and resistance to therapy.
