Article 161 [Annual Report on Social Development]

The provision adopts the same phraseology as ex-Article 145 TEC and has as its objective the maintenance of the reporting obligation of the European Commission towards the EP on matters of social development and policy. The obligation to report to the EP ensures that the only directly elected body in the Union is specifically informed on matters of social development and is thus in a better position to debate about the selection and the progress of specific social policy choices.
