Article 150 [Employment Committee]

The initiative of establishing an Employment Committee (EMCO) had been formulated by the Council in December 1996; it had been formally enshrined in the Treaty of Amsterdam (ex-Article 130 TEC). The EMCO's role is to promote coordination of MS’s employment and labour market policies, in full compliance with the Treaty and with due regard for the powers of the Union institutions and bodies. The EMCO is an involved observer of the labour market and employment situation in the MS and throughout the EU. From this perspective, its main objective is the monitoring, as it is often closer to the reality of the labour market relations than the high European policymakers.
