The European Union and Singapore maintain intensive trade relations and are actively involved in the further development and modernisation of international economic law. At the same time, both sides are also influenced by a new wave of “geopoliticization” whereby global trade is increasingly shaped by industrial and security policy as a response to supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions. States around the world implement new restrictive measures in order to better control their economic relations. The following article takes a closer look at the recent trade and investment policy developments in Singapore and the European Union. The effects of the new geopolitical influence on trade policy can already be seen, particularly in the area of controlling cross-border investments. In view of the deep investment relations between Singapore and the EU, the question arises as to the extent to which these can be maintained through closer cooperation in the area of investment control.
