24 Qing Dynasty: Imperial examinations

  • Guy S. Alitto

摘要

In this lecture, the intricate relationship between the elite, particularly the gentry or degree holders, and the state in late imperial China, notably during the Qing Dynasty, is explored. The elite, a distinct Chinese creation, held a unique position, being both dependent on the state for recognition through civil service examinations yet also wielding influence independently within society. This dynamic interaction between the state and the elite sheds light on the complexities of governance, social hierarchy, and economic influence in historical Chinese society.
