17 Recurrent Themes in Chinese Civilization: “Mandate of Heaven” and “Dynastic Cycle”

This lecture addresses the question of imperial history as a whole, and synthesizes the recurrent themes of Chinese civilization through millennia. Two out of the eight discussed themes are included in this lecture: “Mandate of Heaven” and “Dynastic Cycle.” Based on Chinese historical facts, it elaborates on the connotations of “Mandate of Heaven” and its relationship with Tian and the Will of the Masses. Dividing the theme of “Dynastic Cycle” in terms of interior and exterior aspects, it introduces both a unique concept of cyclic time and objective facts in sociological factors.
