15 Spread and Origin of Buddhism in China

  • Guy S. Alitto

摘要

In this lecture, the profound impact of Buddhism on classical Chinese civilization is examined. It delves into the reasons behind Buddhism's rapid spread, akin to Christianity in the West during the Roman Empire's decline. Elite intellectuals found Buddhism intellectually stimulating amidst societal instability. Additionally, the dynasties embracing Buddhism further accelerated its dissemination. The lecture traces Buddhism's origins to Gautama Sakyamuni, a Nepalese prince, who questioned human suffering and existence. It explores methods prescribed for enlightenment, highlighting challenges in integrating Buddhism into Confucian-based Chinese society due to its aristocratic origins and conflicting societal obligations.
