The Palgrave Handbook of Digital Latin American Studies

摘要

Over the last thirty years, digital technologies have become embedded in virtually all aspects of life in Latin America, for better or for worse, from being associated with new forms of extractivism and labour, influencing elections and enabling new forms of surveillance, to being appropriated in new social practices and art forms. In this period of time, the field of studies dedicated to tracing the uses and impacts of digital technologies in the societies and cultures of the region has inevitably expanded exponentially, and digital tools have also offered varied new ways of studying the region and communicating that new knowledge to others.

The Palgrave Handbook of Digital Latin American Studies proposes to bring together the different strands of this vibrant new field of enquiry, offering a sample of both the many ways in which the use and appropriation of digital media technologies and platforms have changed life in the region as well as the ways in which digital technologies have changed the way we do Latin American studies in terms of methods. It seeks to cover key topics relating to the engagement with the digital in all the disciplines and fields of study normally understood to comprise Latin American Studies, as well as offering as balanced a coverage of the region in geopolitical terms as possible, while recognising that the spread of digital technologies across the region has been very uneven.
