Abstract

A new type of element providing the synchronization of modes in a fiber laser source of ultrashort pulses is proposed. This element represents a pair of coupled microfiber tapers coated with a layer of carbon nanotubes and combines the functions of a saturable absorber and an output coupler. The proposed variant of manufacturing the saturable coupler is characterized by technological simplicity and can be applied almost in any optical laboratory. Based on the obtained absorber–coupler prototype and active erbium doped fibers, a ring fiber laser was manufactured to experimentally demonstrate the synchronization of modes with the generation of picosecond soliton pulses
