Abstract

Grinding is an important method of cutting tool production. An approach is proposed to calculating the shape of tools’ chip channels and adjusting the grinding wheel’s position on that basis, taking account of the wheel’s wear. This approach may be used in setting up multiaxial CNC machine tools. A formula is derived for determining the wheel’s position relative to the workpiece on the basis of the toroidal profile of the helical front surface, other geometric parameters of the wheel, and the shaping accuracy of the helical surface. The corresponding setup is identified, and the profile parameters of the helical channel are analyzed as a function of various setup parameters. That yields the permissible range of surface error.
